Plymouth Gin

GIN

A gin type with the same brand name and one of my favorite gins

You might know Plymouth as a brand of gin, but it’s actually not just a brand; it’s a type of gin. When there’s only one brand producing this type of gin and it becomes synonymous with the name, it’s totally normal to have such a perception.

Plymouth Gin has been produced since 1793 with the same recipe in one of the oldest distilleries in England, located in the city of Plymouth on the South West coast. Up until 2014-2015, it held a geographical indication status. However, when the Plymouth brand, the sole producer of this gin type, refused to renew it (likely due to the need to disclose the recipe and production details), the geographical indication status was removed.

It contains seven different botanicals: juniper, coriander, cardamom, orris root, angelica, orange peel, and lemon peel. While juniper is still prominent, unlike classic London Dry gins, Plymouth Gin offers a smoother taste. High proportion of root botanicals in the blend gives an earthy taste and there are also distinct citrus notes present.

Unfortunately, Plymouth gin exited the Turkish market last year. It’s one of the gins I particularly enjoy using in a Negroni cocktail. Plymouth Original has an alcohol content of 41.2%. The same brand also offers Navy Strength gin bottled at 57% and Sloe gin.

There might still be some bottles left on store shelves. If you come across it, I definitely recommend buying a bottle.
